What to Expect Your First Week Bringing Your Doodle Home

Navigating the beautiful, busy first seven days with your new Goldendoodle puppy.
Pickup Day & The Journey Home
The big day is here! When you pick up your puppy from The Doodle Nook, keep the car ride calm. Bring a towel and a small crate for safety. Avoid making extra stops; your puppy’s immune system is still developing, and they need to get home to rest.
Feeding, Potty & Sleep Rhythm
Stick to the schedule we provided. Feed high-quality puppy food three times a day. Take them to their designated potty spot immediately after eating, waking up, or playing. For sleep, keep the crate near your bed initially so they feel your presence.
Socialization & Safe Exposure
While your puppy isn’t fully vaccinated yet, gentle socialization is key. Introduce them to various household sounds (vacuum, TV, doorbell) and a few trusted, fully vaccinated dogs in a controlled environment. This builds confidence without compromising their health.
Essential Puppy Supplies
Ensure you have the following ready before arrival:
- Adjustable Collar & Leash: For safety and early training.
- Crate: A cozy “den” for sleep and potty training.
- Puppy Food: High-quality kibble as recommended by the breeder.
- Chew Toys: To help with teething and mental stimulation.
- Grooming Kit: A slicker brush and comb for their wavy coat.
The First 7 Days
Arrival and quiet exploration.
Establishing the rhythm.
Crate sanctuary bonding.
Gentle bonding and short play.
Supervised crate sessions.
Monitoring energy and appetite.
First wellness check with vet.
Common Mistakes
The biggest hurdle is over-stimulation. Limit visitors for the first 48 hours and avoid “free-feeding” to help with potty training. Consistency is your best friend during this transition.
When to Call the Vet
Contact your vet if you notice lethargy, refusal to eat for more than two meals, or persistent diarrhea. It’s always better to be safe during these early stages of development.
